The Boeing P-26 nicknamed the "Peashooter" was the first all-metal monoplane fighter used by the United States Army Air Corps - USAAC. It was also the last open-cockpit, fixed-landing-gear, braced-wing pursuit plane to serve in the USAAC. The P-26 had a reasonably brief operational life, but it would become one of the best known and loved aircraft of the pre-war era.
The Boeing-funded project to produce the Boeing Model 248 began in September 1931, with the Army Air Corps supplying engines, propellers, instruments, radios, and other military hardware necessary to complete the project. The Army Air Corps contracted for three prototypes, designated XP-936, with the first flight on 20th March 1932.
The Army Air Corps ordered 111 P-26s on January 11th, 1933, later increasing this to 136 - the largest single contract for aircraft issued since 1921. Deliveries to service squadrons began in December 1933 (20th Pursuit Group at Barksdale Field, Louisiana), and the last plane in the series, designated P-26C, was rolled from the assembly line in 1936. By that time the machine was badly outclassed by the single-seat Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters, which made its first flight on September 1935 in Germany, and the Polikarpov I-16s of the Soviet Union, which made its first flight on December 1933.
During the years 1932-1934 the P-26 set several speed and altitude records - it was a popular pilot's plane and performed well until outclassed by more modern fighters.
As originally delivered, all P-26s had yellow wings and tail surfaces with olive drab fuselages and landing gear leg spats. Later on, the olive drab was replaced by medium blue. The decal set provided with this kit enables you to build one of the three P-26s ("13", "14", "15") that belonged to the 94th Pursuit Squadron, or the P-26 ("96") that belonged to the 17th Pursuit Squadron at Selfridge Field, Michigan.
This model is designed for intermediate to advanced builders and pilots. The flying qualities and performance of this scale P-26 is much like larger aircraft, i.e. it is more docile, and easy to control.
P-26 Peashooter ARF Highlights:
- It is made of polystyrene with a hardened surface layer, reducing its propensity to suffer from surface scratches. Thanks to the advantageous weight/strength ratio of the material used the model is quite sturdy and a risk of damage in normal flying is very low.
- Great attention was devoted to the aerodynamics of this model (e.g. a semi-symmetric wing section and a symmetric section of the horizontal tail were used, etc.) to create a superb flying airplane.
