A great flying Piper that isn't a J-3 | |
53-1/4" wingspan, 39-1/2" long, 360 sq. in. wing area, 34 oz. flying weight. The baby brother to our 1/4 scale PA-12, one half the size but retains the fun and great scale looks. All laser cut balsa and plywood construction, pre-built and pre-decorated, can be assembled and ready-to-fly in a matter of hours.
Covered in genuine Oracover for great looks now and in the future. Step-by-step photo illustrated instructions will guide even the relative novice through the build process to a successful conclusion. While not suitable for the complete novice, the little PA-12 is a very easy to fly airplane. It does not exhibit any bad tendencies and is totally predictable in flight performance. Flight times of 15 minutes plus are the norm. While not an aerobatic airplane, the PA-12 is capable of loops and rolls and inverted flight (not something you would try in a full scale one). Includes pre-bent and assembled landing gear, fiberglass cowl, steerable tail wheel, windshield and side glass, wing struts, wheels and hardware pack. For 4-channels: Ailerons (2 channels), Elevator, Rudder and Throttle. A radio with end point, exponential, and rudder mixing is recommended.

Piper PA-12
Introduction and History The end of World War II saw the resumption of private aircraft manufacture and the Piper Aircraft Company, already well known for the J-3 Cub and the J-5 Cruiser, began production of improved models of these aircraft. These were the Piper PA-11 Cub Special and the Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser. Walter Jamoneau, who was head of the engineering department at Piper for many years, modified the J-5 into the PA-12. Test flights were made in December 1945, and the first production version of the aircraft appeared in February 1946.
The original J-5 series were fabric-covered, three-place, high-wing monoplanes, initially powered by 75-hp Lycoming engines, and later by 90-hp Lycomings. The PA-12 was also fabric-covered, over a welded metal tubular frame and wooden wing spars, and featured a Lycoming O-235-C engine, fully cowled. Later models of the PA-12 had as optional equipment a slightly more powerful engine. Standard features on the PA-12 included an electric starter, navigation lights, and a cabin heater. The Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser was used in a number of roles, from private pleasure flying to light cargo carrying and many are still flying. It was also successful in the export market.

Sent my PA 12 up on it's maiden flight two days ago. I learned very quickly that it likes to take off on it's own without alot of help from me. Just keep it straight and SLOWLY feed in elevator to get it airborne. Once up in the air, be sure to coordinate rudder in with ailerons to achieve the perfect looking turns. Plane will stall, but recovers easily with enough altitude of course!
Mine is set up with a Turnigy 35/36/1000 Kv motor (480 equivalent), Electrifly Silver Series 25 Amp ESC, 9 x 6 prop and fueled with a 3S 2200 mah 20C lipo battery. Puts out 251 watts at WOT, although this beauty flies best at 1/3 throttle allowing 15 minute flights. I can't wait to get back out and fly again, this one truly brings a smile to my face when I fly it! The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the blind nuts didn't line up with the wing. Happy Landings!

I maidened my PA 12 yesterday and I still can't wipe the smile off my face. I set it up with a Turnigy 35/36/1000 motor (480 equivalent), Hitec HS 55 servos all the way around and an Electrifly Silver Series 25 amp ESC. Wide ope throttle gives 251 watts drawing 22.37 amps. The bright side of this awesome little plane is that it only needs about 110 wats to perform like a true scale model. It was a little breezy on my second flight with her and I didn't hear the timer that was set for 8 minute go off. I wound up flying her off a 3S 2200 mah 20 C for 14 minutes and still had 300 mah to spare! Great plane, Pilot One. The only reason that I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the blind nuts didn't line up with the wing. But other than that, this a wonderful flying machine that will teach you to coordinate your turns with some rudder. I chose not to mix the rudder in so that I can fly it like the real plane. I highly recommend this plane for the experienced pilot. Happy Landings :-)

Purchased this airplane about a year ago, along with the recommened eRC 480 900kv motor. Using a Turnigy 25 amp. ESC, 3s 2800 mah battery and Hitec HS-65 servos. I can fly for 13 to 15 minutes on this setup and still have plenty of battery life left. I believe it is very good quaility plane. Build was easy. After mixing 30 percent rudder with aileron it flys very well and relaxing. Loops,Inverted Flying,Hammer Heads and Barrel Rolls are all easy to do. This is not a fast sport plane, it's not suppose to be but I take my PA-12 and my Eflite Mini Pulse to the field 95% of the time This is one of my favorites to fly. Hobby Lobby stands behind their products and this one is engineered very good along with very good quaility materials. Nothing but praise for this 1/8 scale PA-12.

Maiden Flight Christmas Day 2010, Flies great & easy to fly for a advanced pilot. I put mine on skis and is wonderful to fly in the wintertime. I used the E-Flite 480 1020kv motor & the Castle Creations 50amp ICE esc with a 10x7 prop. Take-offs are easy and with a 2200 3 cell lipo I average a good 12 minute hard flying. Easy to build, Hobby Lobby sells great planes=) Futaba 3107 servo's all around. Cubs are always a fun relaxing plane to fly! =)

This airplane was well constructed and went together very well. I have been flying rc again for the past year, and all I own are taidraggers. To me, this airplane did not fly well as compared to my Eflite Taylorcraft, Stinson Reliant, or my Eflite PT19, or P51 Mustang. This airplane has bad stall tendencies in turns, did not handle any wind well, and after several flights, was still difficult for me to "get the hang of". It always wanted to stall in turns, on takeoff, and the slightest breeze caused it to get knocked around and when I tried to correct it wanted to stall. I took the electronics out of it and put them in another Eflite airplane. If you haven't flown an Eflite Taylorcraft you should it is hands down 200% better.
Some of the problems might have been related to my inexperience in the hobby, but I will stick with airplanes that fly well and I do not have to fight all the time.

My Birthday was last week and when I saw the new Pilot series PA-12 - I just had to get the sweet machine.
It came well packed with no damage and I was very pleased with beauty, construction and strength of this fine lill machine. Very well designed and well built to keep it very light and yet real strong - I am quite impressed and I've been in modeling about 50 yrs now. It went together with with very little effort and all parts fit very well - very high quality cowl / looks great ! I had her ready to fly after one evening of steady assembly & programing with my new JR DX-7 2.4 radio. I used an E-flite 450 motor with a 1300 lipo pack to keep it light - she has a very light wing loading ! It was a bit breezy out for a test flight (10 MPH) but she flew like a homesick angel ! Very agile and effortless to fly and she looks just like a real PA-12 cruising above the tree line - what a wonderful flying / super looking model - my hats off to Hobby Lobby and the designers for another great success ! Seeing how great this one is - I am very anxious to get my hands on the larger 1/4 scale big brother - it would be mighty fine with that new 20 CC gas Satio 4 stroke ! Again - I definitly give the lill PA-12 a huge 5 + Great job guys ! keep up the good work & have FUN ! Rod Maier in PA.

What a great airplane!!!! Great kit, great instruction manual, and a first flight that will send chills of nostalgia up your spine. I just cannot get over how good it looks on those fly-bys. The guys in our club that aren't into slow scale even commented on what a pretty plane the sc was as she passed by. I put a 2217 motor in her with a 20 amp ESC as well as a 3s 2200 mah lipo. This was a solid combination. The aileron to rudder and differential mixing that the manual calls for is not required to fly the plane, but it sure makes it fly much smoother. I started at the recommended A->R mixing and ended up with quite a bit more to get it to my liking. I also have flown her with a 1300 mah lipo which gets the weight down to 30.5 ounces. She flies much smoother with the 2200 mah if there is any wind at all. I could do fly-bys with her all day and be happy!!!

Superb kit in every way! Excellent scale fidelity, top quality construction and engineering, everything fits together so well! The instruction booklet is well-presented, with good illustrations and comprehensive step-by-step details. LOVE the scale color scheme. Mine will be powered with a .15-size gas engine. Can't wait to show it off to the guys out at the field!

Anyone who likes cubs and trainers will love this plane. It does take a few hours longer to assemble than suggested.the workmanship and detail is great and you will get a lot of attention at the flying field.the plane is very easy to take off and land and the viability in the air against a blue sky is fantastic. This is for an advanced beginner or higher up because of its ailerons and how they have to be programmed with the rudder for proper turning.and it would be to your advantage to have put together a few other planes before this one..i put what i consider a high power system in this plane. eflite 480,30a esc and dx6i system.you can go to less power but i had this set up so i used it.keep an eye on the line up of the engine and if you shim it,the engine wants to be a little downward and to the right viewed from the cockpit.so if you like cubs, this is a must have for your hanger.

I think the Piper Cub Super Cruiser is the best Pilot-1 plane to date!
