Golden Age Racer that's fun to fly | |
In the late 1920's and early 30's air racing was huge in the United States. Racing pioneers like Granville, Rider, Laird, Howard and Curtiss were familiar names, but there was no one who had more success than Jimmy Wedell and his Wedell-Williams racers, particularly the Model 44. In the years 1931-34, Jimmy Wedell's Model 44 placed in the top three in the Thompson Trophy Race 7 times, including 2 wins. 40" wingspan, 31" long, 325 sq. in. wing area, 35 oz. flying weight. Our model 44 captures the look and excitement of this classic airplane in a modern laser cut ARF. We combined racer looks with sport flyer handling for an easy to fly, easy to build airplane. Model is all laser cut balsa and ply construction, pre-covered in genuine Oracover. Cowl is pre-finished fiberglass, wheel pants are molded plastic. Includes flying wires, tail braces, pre-bent wire landing gear, steerable tail wheel and hardware. Easy access to the flight batteries under the magnetic battery hatch in the fuselage. Photo illustrated instructions included, assembly time approximately 8-12 hours. While not suitable for the novice, the Model 44 is an easy rc plane to fly. Anyone with some aileron airplane experience should not have any problems flying this airplane. Our recommended power system provides plenty of power for quick take-offs and powerful climbouts. All regular aerobatic maneuvers are easily performed with this airplane. Its light wing loading makes it easy to slow down for landing. For 4-channels: Ailerons (2 servos), Elevator, Rudder and Throttle. Technical Specifications: | Length: | 31" | | Wingspan: | 40" | | Flying Weight: | 35 oz. | | Controls: | Ailerons (2 servos), Elevator, Rudder, Throttle | | Wing Area: | 325 sq. in. |

If your flying field is crowded with warbirds and post-war civilian ships, then this 1930s speedster is for you.
One of the first offerings from Hobby-Lobby's Pilot-1 series, the 1/8 Scale Wedell-Williams ARF brings the classic Bendix Trophy racer to market in a sturdy, well built kit. Any new design suffers from a few "first-run" glitches and this kit is no exception, but Hobby-Lobby's first-class staff has been quick to address these issues both online and on the phone. I would suspect that by the time you read this, the second run of kits will have any remaining kinks ironed out. I believe I received one of the first kits off the assembly line.
The kit goes together quickly and the airframe is easy to assemble. The only negative is a poor black-and-white instruction manual with low-resolution photographs (minus one star.) Fortunately, H-L offers a color version available as a .pdf: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showatt.php?attachmentid=2290669
The scale flight wires are really tricky to run throughout the plane\'s exterior. But they look great and are worth the extra effort. Once you get those assembled with the scale teardrop wheel pants you will be grinning from ear-to-ear as this this classic "golden age" racer comes to life.
I personally would like to see some additional scale graphics, but H-L has provided a solid plane that can be customized to one of the many designs this plane wore over it's short lifespan. I have a feeling this is the first of many planes I will be purchasing from the Hobby-Lobby's Pilot-1 series.
