Fast, Tough, No frills fun at a great price | |
Our Mig has a 28" wingspan, is 28" long and has a flying weight of 18-1/2 oz. Looking for a jet that you can take anywhere and fly at a moments notice? Look no further, the Mig-15 is a receiver-ready EPO jet that is pre-painted and ready to assemble in about an hour. The wings and tail are reinforced with carbon tubes for a solid and reliable airframe. Designed for simple everyday flying, the model is hand launched and lands on the reinforced drop tanks.
Includes a 64mm ducted fan with a 4300Kv outrunner brushless motor and 30 amp controller with BEC. A 1600mAh 3-cell LiPo battery (pre-connected with genuine Deans Ultra connectors) supplies the power. Three 9-gram servos are pre-installed and ready to plug into your radio equipment; a minimum of 3 channels is required. The large battery hatch is held in place by magnets making battery swaps quick and easy. Easy to hand launch, the model handles easily and is a solid performer with good speed and a quick roll rate. Landings are low anxiety events due to the slow approach speed and the tough airframe. The MIG-15 is also available Airframe Only version.
Full throttle flight speed is around 65MPH and flight time on the included 1600mAH LiPo pack is 5-6 minutes.
What is EPO Foam? - EPO Foam is similar to elapor and other durable foam used for building model airplanes. It is denser and more forgiving to knicks and scratches than EPS or "Ice Chest" foam. It holds up well over time and resists dings, dents, and minor crash damage.
Mig-15 EPO Jet ARF Highlights: - 64mm EDF

This model goes together very straightforward and easy. Everything you need to assemble it including the epoxy is there. I did use some sandpaper to clean away the paint from the glue joints, and recommend this in the wing sockets. It would not make much sense to glue to the paint and loose a wing.
I would have given this a five star rating except the bulky hardware on the elevator horns that comes locktited in place. That is good if you use it, but I have always disliked the look of this kind of hardware on the outside. It is redudent since you this kind of connector at the servo. Thankfully they supplied clevi to replace this hardware if desired.
Thank you Hobby Lobby for a value priced complete kit of a great looking jet. Get to fly it tomorrow.

HL's MIG-15 and Sabre offer a lot fun for a few bucks. Check out this video for build and flights.

I am an average pilot and and have been looking for a good starter EDF for some time. I had tried some cheaper models (i.e., Hobby King), but had no success. I have always liked the look of the MIG-15, so this model seemed like a good one to try.
The airplane is very easy to assemble. All components were in good shape and the CG came out perfectly with the supplied battery. I was very happy with the overall kit quality.
I have considerable experience hand launching airplanes, but I was still a little nervous with this one. Luckily, the shape of the plane allows for a good grip, and my first hand launch went perfectly. Just make sure you give it a good straight push - and get a friend to help on the first flights. The flying qualities are very good - good control and not overly sensitive. The only uncomfortable moments came when I performed maneuvers that resulted in a very low airspeed. This happened when I tried a loop without sufficient airspeed. When the plane slowed down at the top of the loop the controls become useless, and the plane tumbled and fell out of control until sufficient airflow was moving over the surfaces. This is the big difference between an EDF and a prop plane, where the prop wash still provides control even with minimal airspeed.
The speed range is excellent - from brisk to a very reasonable landing speed. Landings on grass have been nice and smooth with no damage at all. Another nice thing is the relatively pleasant sound of the motor - my other EDFs had a very shrill squeal that was really unpleasant. This one isn't bad at all.
I really can't think of a single complaint about the model. It is the perfect introduction to EDFs if you have some sport aileron experience, and just make sure you keep the speed up (or fly high!).

You get excellent bang for the buck here. It looks good and is built pretty solid. Plenty of power and very stable. Just be careful and make sure you glue everything together together straight. There is some play when dry fitting the wings and horizontal stabs, so just be sure that everything is centered. Also, be sure to watch Jason's launch video. I wish the flight times were a bit longer, but that is typical of EDFs. Overall, this is an excellent little Mig, and I highly recommend it!

This is a great little jet, not like the F-86 Sabre "Jolley Roger" EPO Jet ARF, this Mig-15 is built much tougher, I really like it...

I just received an email from HL, and they are replacing the damaged parts, they do have the best service I have ever seen. Thank you HL..
|
I received my Mig-15 with a bad ESC a couple weeks later I received a replacement ESC and my first flight went very well, but then during my second flight the motor shut down and the jet crashed in many pieces, It is so disappointing, I hope that Hobby Lobby does something to help me do to the ESC issues I had from day one.

Awesome job once again from HL. As long as they keep putting out products like these I will keep buying them. They have added carbon rods and a stab stiffener you put in yourself but this is easily a one evening build maybe two for someone with not so much experience with foam jets. The wings and the stab are perfect fits and I even used the included 5 minute tube epoxy which is something I usually don't do. The finish is beautiful and very durable and they went as far as to add an ABS reinforcing ring to the nose intake inlet. That was a very nice touch because their A7 did not have this and any kind of nose low landing tore up the intake. I did make two modifications and these are only a matter of preference not really necessary. I don't happen to like push-rod connectors on my control surfaces because while they do work there is too much risk IMO that they will come loose in flight ending in a very bad day. So I replaced the push-rods with threaded push-rods and clevises and since the same deal exists on the single servo arm I added a servo and used push-rod keepers on this end so now they will not come apart in flight. I used a Spek DX7 and AR500 receiver and mixed the elevator servos and used the included y-harness on the ailerons. It's not really that fast but it's fast enough considering the size and the short amount of time it takes to fly out of visual orientation. Buy this.

Very nice looking MIg and a good flyer once you get the CG right. I upgraded the battery to a 11.1v 2200mah lipo and the plane was still tail heavy. The battery is as far forward as you can get it. I added 1.5oz off lead weight to the nose and now the Mig fly's very well. The CG in the manual is not correct. I moved the CG 1/2in forward from where the manual says and she flys very well there. I hope this help's someone because it took 3 flights before I found the right CG location. After saying that I will admit this is one tough little plane. It nosed it in a couple of times trying to find the correct CG and the Mig just kept on coming back for more. I also had one bad servo in the kit and I just replaced it with a Hitec HS-55. At only $119.00 this is a good deal and a lot of fun to fly.

Pros: Fast, Durable, Looks good, and of course - the price! Just like the Sabre F-86 model, very easy access to the fan and ESC after assembly if you want to upgrade either in the future. Absolutely great for learning to fly EDF jets, or flying where there's nowhere to land but grass.
Cons: My vertical stab was molded a bit crooked, but I fixed this with a 3mm hobby stick. The fan was rubbing (so did my Sabre) I found putting tension on the ESC lines resolved this - since the EDF assembly does not come glued to the plane you need only move them around to fix the problem. I had to adjust the servo's neutral positions because they would dig into the foam when moving, also an easy fix is you have a digital transmitter (the servos are pre-glued and would be gruesome to attempt to reinstall)
Overall I think this is a really nice buy, and has almost enough thrust to lift it's own weight if you have a larger capacity battery installed (2200mah) - so it's pretty fast and decently acrobatic. The assembly is pretty straight forward and easy, but the tail can be a bit tedious. If you're just getting into EDF jets, or just want one to bash and carry around in your trunk for clear days - this is a great plane for the job, it's damn fun!

Foam/paint is great. ESC connections to motor not connected. Not much room for fingers/connections. One hinge on wing not secure. Going to add rudder. Over all looks like a good plane. Build/fly to follow.

Well for $119 I decided to get the Mig-15. I put it together fast and was ready to fly. First flight with stock setup, I threw it straight out and it took off perfectly from my hand launch, straight as an arrow. It flew great as well. Pretty fast for a 3 cell setup! Do be careful when turning, keep your speed up or it will stall and spin on you!
2nd Flight - Hand launch didn't go so well. Plane stalled on launch and flopped around till it hit the ground. Luckily landed on belly and no damage other than a slightly out of place battery tray. Fixed with CA and ready for 3rd flight.
3rd Flight - Hand launch didn't go well again. Plane stalled and flopped around in the air for about 10 seconds. Amazingly I got control before a crash and it zoomed into the air and flew great.
I decided now to add wheels to this jet because hand launching is very tricky. I don't know why my first hand launch was perfect, but my 2nd and 3rd went horribly wrong. I hand launch jets often, and I am an advanced pilot, so my skills aren't to blame. I have CG set exactly as manual says.
4th flight will be with wheels added(I have already added wheels including steering nose gear). Should make this plane fly a little slower with the drag of the wheels, but at least I won't destroy the plane from a hand launch gone bad.
All in all it is a great flying plane. Once speed is up, it soars through the sky and handles well. It landed easy in the grass too. Just keep your wings level to the ground and glide in for a smooth landing.
I gave 4 out of 5 stars because of how hard it is to launch. But it flies great once in the air.
|
I want to give this a 5 stars just for the fast processing & shipping it took less than 2 days to receive this package, I have been reading that it has had a lot of faulty servo with this particular kit so I'm going to have to check the servos out.
Mike
Props again for fast processing & Shipping of this product HL :)

First time order with hobby lobby, got the plane in 4 days fast shipping, plane looks great out of the box went together in about a hour, charged battery tested electronics everything worked great, only problem i had was the first flight i tried hand tossing it and it went to the dirt then I had someone else hand toss and got it in the air and found it needed trimmed allot but i got trimmed then tossed and so far i have flown it 5 times and no crashes the plane is great its not a rocket ship but does cover distances very quickly fun little jet for the money and the thing is super tough it will be one i will keep for a long time.
|
This is on nice looking plane. It went today very quickly and I am looking forward to flying it. The kit did come with one bad servo and I am waiting for Hobby Lobby to return my call and send me another servo. I followed the instructions to the letter and did not discover the bad servo until I went to install the clevis and control rod. The plane was already fully assembled at that time so it will be a challenge to install to new servo with out do to much damage to the plane. Over all if the servo was not bad I would have given this plane a full 5 stars

This jet is an incredible bargain. Not only do you get everything in the box except the receiver, but the build quality seems pretty high (better than my friends F-86, but maybe he had an older version). The jet easily hand launches with just a gentle toss, no hard throw needed. With power off for landing, the jet soars for a long ways before touchdown. This jet would have received 5 stars except that the canopy hatch had very poor quality red paint problems with lots of bubbles, most of the bubbles have now flaked off and the paint with it. Looks great in the air. I would not recommend any "up-trim" for launch.

Nice little foam EDF. Lots of bang for the buck. This is a true RX ready plane. All else is included. The build could not be easier. On You Tube, search "Br5499a" for pictures, videos, and commnets.
